“IN VIVO MECHANICS OF THE INTERVERTEBRAL DISC”
by DAWN ELLIOTT, PHD
Blue and Gold Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering
University of Delaware
The primary function of musculoskeletal tissues is to support and transfer mechanical loads, therefore, a key element to address musculoskeletal disorders must include biomechanics and the relationship between underlying tissue structure and mechanical function. Despite the tremendous mechanical demands and complex structure, there is little known about the in vivo annulus fibrosus mechanics, because it is difficult to measure these behaviors, as the spine is located deep within the torso. To address this, we developed an MRI-based approach to use 3D image registration to quantify disc strains under physiological loads.
